Employees are visiting Facebook more than any other site when they are at work, and twice as often as the second most visited site, Google. Research out this week from Network Box, a Managed Security Services company, shows that visits to the social network accounted for 6.8% of all workplace traffic in Q1 2010, exactly twice the 3.4% of all traffic that went to Google.

Some advertising is better than others—people watch the Super Bowl for the commercials, and movie trailers are often better than the films they promote. The Toy Story 3, Nike, and Bed Bath & Beyond ads that Jobs demo’d in Cupertino belong in this superior category. Even though they were simple efforts, dummied up in a limited amount of time, they’re engaging—you actually want to interact with them. Compare that with the sorry state of Web advertising. Assuming you don’t have ad-blocking software installed, when was the last time you gave more than a glance to a display ad on a Web page? Have you ever felt anything other than exasperation as an “interstitial” prevented you from accessing a news article online? Clearly, there will be a great many annoying iAd ads. (That’s going to get tiring to say.) But in a way that the Web has never delivered on, advertising on the iPhone and iPad has the potential to be a fun and engrossing experience.”

- Summers, on Apple’s iPad ad platform (via newsweek)

Viral Video Chart

Viral Video Chart:
kw2ideas:

The dirty little secret of office technology is that no one can agree on how exactly to measure white-collar productivity. That means, in turn, that no one can prove definitively that PCs and other technologies contribute anything to productivity.

What the experts have figured out is how to track what office workers actually spend their time doing. The results indicate that — contrary to any assumptions about their usefulness — personal computers, smartphones, notebooks, netbooks and associated gadgets can be such massively beguiling, addictive time sinks that they materially damage the economy — draining it by one-sixteenth, according to one calculation.

Ad Spending by Media Source

Absolut vodka and agency TBWA/Chiat/Day tapped director Spike Jonze to create a branded short — minus the branding — to premiere at Sundance. The film, “I’m Here,” follows an android who falls in love; the brand associations are attached through other marketing efforts around the film. “This is an emotional expression of the brand,” Absolut’s Anna Malmhake says. “None of us could see what a shot of the vodka would have added.”
